MEET RECAP: Pioneer Women's Swimming Finishes Second at Slug Shootout
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The No. 15 Cal State East Bay women's swimming team showcased strong performances at the Slug Shootout, securing second place overall among eight teams in the two-day meet at UCSC Pool. The Pioneers had two first place relay finishes and five individual first place finishes.
Below are the notable relay performances for the Pioneers throughout Friday and Saturday in the Slug Shootout.
- 400 yard medley relay: East Bay's team of Taylor Kolsch, Kylie Beaudet, Alexia Fajardo and Brooklyn Dressel placed first, clocking in at 3:57.60
- 200 yard freestyle relay: Dressel, Delaney Carlson, Emilie Giannini and Tehani Kong placed second in 1:38.16.
- 200 yard medley relay: Lily Caraway, Beaudet, Kong and Dressel won the event in 1:48.52.
- 400 yard freestyle relay: Dressel, Kong, Kali Mull and Fajardo finished second in 3:33.68.
Additionally, there were several outstanding performances for individual events among the Pioneers.
- Hannah Sharp secured 1st place in the 200 yard backstroke, finishing in 2:07.06. Sharp also placed second in the 100 yard backstroke in 59.04 seconds.
- Tehani Kong took 1st place with a time of 26.02 in the 50 yard butterfly (26.02) and the 100 yard butterfly (57.05). Also, Kong also precisely tied for third in the 50 yard freestyle in 24.30 seconds.
- East Bay swept the top three places in the 200 yard butterfly with Fajardo (2:07.75), Kong (2:08.16) and Reese Veron (2:12.84) placing first, second and third respectively.
- Beaudet won the 200 yard individual medley in 2:11.26. She also placed third in the 400 yard individual medley in 4:37.60.
- Mull placed second in the 1,000 yard freestyle in 10:57.30.
- Taking third in the 50 yard backstroke was Caraway with a time of 27.94 seconds.
- Dressel took third place in the 100 yard freestyle, finishing in 52.74 seconds.
- Fajardo placed third in the 50 yard butterfly - 26.72 seconds.
- Bella Shurley finished in third in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:10.40.
- In the longest distance event of the meet and the final event of the meet, Miya French placed second in the 1,650 yard freestyle with a time of 17:35.75.
No. 22 Azusa Pacific was the first place team for scoring in the Slug Shootout.
The 2024 home opener for the Pioneers takes place on Friday, November 1 when they host Simon Fraser for a dual meet at Pioneer Pool in Hayward, California. The meet will be the first of back-to-back home dual meets against the Red Leafs taking place over two days.
