Sayfurahman’s Second Half Strike Gives Pioneers a Draw
HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay women's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw against visiting Chico State on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers moved to 4-4-2 in CCAA play with the draw, equalizing on a second-half goal from Sayfurahman.
After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats broke through in the 54th minute when Hannah Pieri scored to put Chico State ahead, 1-0. The Pioneers responded with renewed energy, pushing forward to create more attacking opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Sayfurahman sent a left-footed shot from outside the box over the goalie and inside the far post to tie it. Abigail Kern recorded the assist.
From there, Cal State East Bay's defense stood tall against a relentless Chico State offense that tallied 21 total shots and 10 corner kicks. Goalkeeper Natalie Hassmann was outstanding between the posts, recording seven saves to preserve the draw, including several key stops in the closing minutes.
Offensively, the Pioneers produced seven total shots, with Sayfurahman, Rachel Mull, and Morgan Pearson leading the charge.
East Bay moved into a 3-way tie for the final spot in the CCAA Tournament with one match left to play. The Pioneers sit with 14 total points, even with Cal State San Marcos and Cal State LA. EB hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday where a win would go a long way to securing a tournament berth.
