Cal State East Bay Athletics Champions Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay is proud to reaffirm its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as integral components of our campus culture and community. In our ongoing efforts to foster an environment where every individual feels valued and respected, we are excited to join the NCAA in celebrating its 2024 Week of Inclusion.
Recognizing the importance of diverse perspectives, Cal State East Bay is dedicated to creating spaces where all voices can be heard. Our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is leading the charge by organizing events and networking opportunities that bring together athletes from all backgrounds. These initiatives aim to promote understanding, support, and collaboration among the Pioneer community.
"For us, inclusion is about cultivating a sense of belonging for every Pioneer," said Allison Kern, Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics. "Creating a space that isn't just safe to bring authentic self, but one where we can all recognize the value of that authenticity is incredibly important. When someone feels seen and understood, they are free to be the best versions of themselves. That is what makes our entire team(s) better."
Jenny Thigpin, Head Coach of Cal State East Bay Women's Basketball adds, "Inclusive locker rooms play a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of athletes. We cultivate a culture that benefits our entire program when we embrace inclusivity. As a coach, I wholeheartedly encourage athletes to be their authentic selves. My approach is rooted in patience and active listening, and I ask every team member to treat one another with respect. Each person is unique, and it's this diversity that strengthens us. I want our athletes to BE BOLD in expressing who they are.
The Pioneers are focused on three key initiatives:
-
Inclusive Events: A series of workshops, panels, and social gatherings that celebrate diversity and encourage open dialogue among student-athletes.
-
Networking Opportunities: Programs designed to connect athletes with mentors and resources that support their personal and professional growth.
-
Educational Resources: Training sessions focused on understanding and addressing biases, fostering respect, and promoting allyship within the community.
Cal State East Bay believes that prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion can create a richer and more vibrant campus environment. We invite all members of our community to engage with these initiatives and help us build a future where everyone feels empowered to be their authentic selves.
Note: The NCAA Week of Inclusion social media campaign is October 15th-17th.
