SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State East Bay baseball edged ahead multiple times and racked up 20 hits, and led by as many as nine runs, but the Pioneers dropped a heartbreaker in a 15-14, 12-inning loss to Cal State San Marcos on Sunday afternoon at Dennis A. Pugh Field in a CCAA series finale. The Cougars scored the winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning, sealing a wild game that featured multiple lead changes, and a combined 35 hits and nine errors between both teams.

GAME SUMMARY |
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Pioneers answered with four runs in the second inning, sparked by a triple from Quinn Ayres. Amayas Lamar, Dominick Najar, Gio Martini, and Camron Grant followed with RBIs in the inning. East Bay added four more in the third, helped by a RBIs from Ayres and Lamar, along with a two-run single from Martini for an 8-1 lead.
CSUSM got one run back, but Grant launched a three-run blast in the top of the fifth for an 11-2 lead. East Bay looked in control, but the Cougars chipped away with a three-run sixth and a five-run ninth, capped by a bases-clearing double from Phoenix Sommay that tied the game at 13-13 in the bottom of the ninth.
Through the 10th and 11th innings neither team was able to cross the plate despite mutiple instances with a runner in scoring position. a total of seven runners were stranded through the first two extra innings.
Danelle Daniels led off the 12th with a double, and reached third after a throwing error. East Bay scratched across a run in the top of the 12th when Jacob Froess dropped down a bunt for an RBI fielder's choice bringing home Daniels for a 14-13 lead. Despite taking the lead, three runners were left on base for the Pioneers.
However, CSUSM answered with two in the bottom half of the 12th for the win, including an RBI groundout by Sommay to tie the game and the game-winning RBI single from Garrett Teunissen.
