Pioneer Baseball Takes Series with 7-4 Victory Over Chico State on Senior Day
HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball wrapped up its final home series of the regular season with a 7-4 victory over Chico State at Pioneer Baseball Field on Sunday to take three of four games in the series.
Before the game, nine were honored as part of the Senior Day Ceremony including Donovan Bailey, Brenden Bell, Garrison Finck, Sam Gilliam, Matthew Mandeville, Niko Mollat, Luke Novitske, Matthew O'Mahony and Tristin Tatum.
GAME SUMMARY |
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single hit by Gilliam. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Bailey launched his second home run of the season for a grand slam and a 5-0 advantage for CSUEB.
Although the Wildcats put a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third, Bailey singled through the left side for his fifth RBI of the day as O'Mahony crossed the plate for a 6-2 lead. .
The Pioneers would score their final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Mandeville through the left side that drove in Novitske for a 7-2 lead.
The Wildcats would score a run each in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth, but the Pioneers finished the game with a 7-4 win for their third straight victory.

- Gabe Tanner picked up the win for the Pioneers, improving to 9-3. In 8.2 innings on the mound, he allowed four runs and struck out three batters faced.
- Sergio Calderon had a strikeout against the only batter he faced to pick up his first save of the season.
- Bailey went 2-for-4 with five RBIs and one run scored to lead the Pioneers' offense.
- Mandeville and Jaylen Hodges each had a pair of hits as well.
- The three-game win streak is the longest for the Pioneers this season in CCAA action. With three straight wins, the Pioneers remain mathematically within reach of a CCAA Tournament possibility, but would need to win most, if not all of their four remaining games and get help from other action in the CCAA in the final week of the 2024 regular season to qualify.
