Pioneer Women's Basketball Falls to Cal POly Humboldt on Thursday

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell short against Cal Poly Humboldt in a 66-60 defeat on Thursday evening at Pioneer Gymnasium.

GAME SUMMARY

The Pioneers started strong, taking a 14-10 lead after the first quarter. Kelsey Valencia's three-pointer in the final minute gave East Bay a 12-10 edge, and Joia Armstrong capped off the period with a last-second layup following an offensive rebound.

However, the Lumberjacks dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 26-10 to take a 36-24 lead into halftime. Cal Poly Humboldt's surge proved to be the turning point in the contest.

The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets, with each side scoring 21 points. Despite a late push by the Pioneers in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lumberjacks 15-9, they were unable to overcome the deficit.

  • Taylor Eldredge led the charge for East Bay, showcasing her offensive prowess and defensive tenacity. The junior guard finished with a game-high 20 points, shooting 8-for-20 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the free-throw line. Eldredge also contributed significantly on the defensive end, recording five steals.
  • Aunika Hornung had a team-high eight rebounds for the Pioneers.
  • The Lumberjacks shot an efficient 43.1 percent from the field compared to East Bay's 36.4 percent.

Looking ahead, the Pioneers will aim to bounce back as they host Chico State in another CCAA matchup on Saturday, February 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward, California. East Bay will be looking to avenge their previous loss to the Wildcats, who defeated the Pioneers 100-49 on December 5.
