Pioneer Women's Basketball Unable to Stave Off Rally by Stanislaus State on Thursday

TURLOCK, Calif. - In a CCAA game on Thursday, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team lost to Stanislaus State with a final score of 58-57 at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, and have dropped five straight games. Despite leading at halftime with a score of 34-24, and by as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers could not hold off a late rally from the Warriors.

GAME SUMMARY

The Pioneers led by as much as 11 points in the first quarter and finished with a 21-11 lead. The second quarter lead was as much as 13 points. Stanislaus State was able to cut its deficit to 10 points by halftime as the Pioneers led 34-24 heading into the break. 

In the third quarter, East Bay finished with a 14 point lead after a jumper by Lailah Carey with 10 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Pioneers took a 47-33 lead into the final frame. 

And with the first six points in the fourth quarter for the Pioneers, capped off by a layup from Ariyah Smith built the lead to 53-33 at the 8:53 mark. 

The Warriors surged back into the game, answering a 20 point deficit with 16 unanswered points. The run was broken with 1:47 remaining when Joia Armstrong scored a layup for a 55-49 lead. However, the Warriors continued to climb back. They scored the next five points to cut East Bay's lead to 55-54 with 25.9 seconds remaining. 

Brooke Donnelly made a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds left to give the Pioneers a 57-54 lead. 

After the free throws, the Warriors advanced possession into the front court following a timeout. Shortly after the inbound, with 7.3 seconds left, the Warriors drew a foul and Jadyn Patterson sunk a pair of free throws to cut the Pioneers' lead to one, 57-56. 

East Bay had a chance to go up by as much as three points with 6.5 seconds left, but a pair of free throw attempts were missed and the rebound went to Stanislaus State. Off the rebound, a quick pass set up the Warriors to run the floor and Alyssa Premo made a layup with 1.1 seconds left, drawing a foul as Stanislaus State led for the first time since the first quarter.

The ensuing free throw attempt was rebounded by the Pioneers with 0.8 seconds remaining. After a timeout that advanced the inbound to the front court, the inbound was stolen by the Warriors, who won 58-57.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Armstrong had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Offensively, Armstrong went 5-for-15 from the floor and added a pair of free throws. 
  • Also scoring in double figures for East Bay was Lailah Carey with 11 points
  • Aunika Hornung grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
  • Hornung and Armstrong contributed defensively with a pair of blocks each.
  • Smith had a season-high six steals. 
  • The Pioneers shot 39.3 percent from the floor to Stanislaus State's 30 percent. 
  • East Bay had a 52-43 rebounding edge.

"Tonight was another learning experience for us. We need to be able to sustain leads and close games down the stretch. Being able to execute and hit free throws to close out games has been critical for us. We got to continue to get better and stay together through adversity,"
