No. 25 Cal State East Bay Sweeps CCAA-Opening Doubleheader
HAYWARD, Calif. - The No. 25 Cal State East Bay Pioneers continued their perfect start to the 2025 season, sweeping a CCAA conference-opening doubleheader against Sonoma State on Friday at Pioneer Softball Field. The Pioneers won the first game 5-4 and dominated the second game 8-3.

Game One: Cal State East Bay 5, Sonoma State 4
The Pioneers' bats came alive early in the opener, with Marissa Farias delivering a clutch two-run double in the first inning. Jenna Porto followed with an RBI single, giving East Bay a quick 3-0 lead.
Sonoma State fought back in the second inning, cutting the lead to 3-2 on Sophia Newcomb's triple. However, the Pioneers responded immediately in the bottom half, as Ashlee Toy and Cynthia Carrillo each hit RBI doubles to extend the lead to 5-2.
The Seawolves threatened a comeback with two runs in the fifth on Kaiya Dickens' triple, but East Bay's pitching held firm. Marissa Quintero earned the win, improving to 5-0 on the season with five innings of work and three strikeouts. Jaidyn Gamble secured the save with two scoreless innings to close out the game.
Game Two: Cal State East Bay 8, Sonoma State 3
In the second game, Sonoma State struck first with Lauren Mirtoni's RBI double in the opening frame. The Pioneers quickly answered, as Ashlee Toy hit an RBI triple and later scored on an error, sparking a three-run first inning that included an RBI sacrifice fly from Jennavee Campos.
Toy continued her stellar performance in the second inning at the plate, driving in two more runs to push the lead to 5-1. Alexa Zumstein added another run with a sacrifice fly, making it 6-1.
The Seawolves showed some life with Iris Bejerano's two-run homer in the third, but East Bay pulled away in the fifth. Jeslyn Cuellar's RBI double and and later in the inning, a wild pitch that allowed Cuellar to come to the plate, extended the lead to 8-3.
Toy was dominant both at the plate and in the circle, tossing a complete game with nine strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs. Her pitching performance matched her offensive output, as she improved to 5-0 for the season.

- Toy was phenomenal on Friday in the circle and at the plate. She went 5-for-6, with three doubles, one triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. In game two, she had a complete game win with nine strikeouts. Among the CCAA leaders, Toy is sixth in batting average (.455) and second in ERA (0.53)
- Cynthia Carrillo went 4-for-6 with one double and one RBI
- Gamble has the fourth-lowest ERA in the conference while Quintero has the sixth-lowest ERA in the CCAA.
