HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team continued their dominant start to the 2025 season, sweeping a doubleheader against Menlo College on Saturday at Pioneer Softball Field. The Pioneers showcased their pitching prowess and offensive firepower, securing 8-0 and 5-0 victories to remain unbeaten for the year. Game one ended in five innings by run-rule, and game two was a combined no-hitter. 
 

Game 1: Cal State East Bay 8, Menlo 0 (5 innings)
The Pioneers broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Alexa Zumstein delivered a clutch two-out RBI double, driving in Ashlee Toy for the game's first run. East Bay's offense continued to apply pressure, with Jenna Porto coming through as a pinch hitter in the fourth, plating Ysabella Cortez with another two-out RBI hit to extend the lead to 2-0.

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the fifth as the Pioneers erupted for six runs to seal the victory via run-rule. Zumstein ignited the rally with a two-run homer, her first of the season, pushing the lead to 4-0. The onslaught continued as Marissa Farias scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, followed by Toy drawing a walk to force in another run. Annelise Garcia put the exclamation point on the inning with a two-run single, cementing the 8-0 win.

In the circle, Toy was nothing short of spectacular, tossing a complete-game shutout. The left-handed pitcher allowed just two hits while striking out 10 Menlo batters in her five innings of work improving to 4-0 on the season. 

Game 2: Cal State East Bay 5, Menlo 0 (Combined No-Hitter)
The Pioneers wasted no time in the second game, capitalizing on a Menlo error to plate Annelise Garcia in the bottom of the first. Toy, continuing her stellar day, scored moments later on an RBI groundout from Marissa Farias to give East Bay an early 2-0 advantage.

East Bay's offense struck again in the fourth inning. Pinch-runner Mia Garcia showcased her speed, advancing on a sacrifice and an error before scoring on Ysabella Cortez's RBI groundout. The Pioneers then strung together three consecutive singles from Evyn Morriss, Annelise Garcia, and Toy, with Morriss crossing the plate to push the lead to 4-0.

Annelise Garcia put the finishing touches on the offensive display in the sixth, ripping an RBI triple to give the Pioneers a comfortable 5-0 cushion.

The real story of game two, however, was the dominant pitching performance. Marissa Quintero and Jaidyn Gamble combined for a no-hitter, with Quintero tossing five hitless frames for a 4-0 record this season before Gamble closed out the final two innings to secure the historic achievement.

• Toy went 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored across both games. In the circle, in game one, she pitched 5.0 scoreless innings with only two hits allowed and 10 strikeouts. 
• Annelise Garcia went 4-for-7 with a double, triple, three RBIs, and two runs scored in the doubleheader.
• Zumstein had three RBIs in game one, including a two-run homer.
• Also in game one, Cortez went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. 
• Quintero's stellar outing improved her season record to 4-0, highlighted by an impressive 23.0 innings pitched with only one earned run allowed and 26 strikeouts.
• The Pioneers' pitching staff was nearly untouchable, allowing just two hits combined over 12 innings while recording two shutouts.
• The no-hitter in game two marked East Bay's first since March 24 of last season when they blanked Saint Martin's 12-0.

The Pioneers will hit the road, traveling to Southern California for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders. The Pioneers will face Concordia University Irvine on Friday, February 14, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at Golden Eagles Stadium in Irvine, California.
