Pioneer Spotlight: Compliance and Student Services
This week's Pioneer Spotlight features the Compliance and Student Services unit for Cal State East Bay Athletics.
Marcie Haduca Covell, Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services/Senior Woman Administrator at CSUEB, in her leadership role, oversees the critical areas of the department and has been a part of the Pioneer community since 2021.
During her time at East Bay, Haduca Covell has fostered a strong culture of compliance within the department, creating awareness of new and evolving regulations within the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
She is responsible for developing CSUEB's rules education and monitors initial and continuing eligibility for student-athletes, prepares waiver requests for the NCAA and conference offices and oversees the university's NLI program. A very notable achievement at CSUEB for Haduca Covell includes the implementation of Teamworks Compliance (formerly ARMS) software for the athletic department. She is entering her 14th year in Division II athletic administration and 21st overall working in higher education.
Earlier this year, Haduca Covell was honored for her outstanding leadership within the realm of compliance by receiving the NAAC Division II Excellence Award presented by Spry.
Haduca Covell also serves as the chair of the Division II Committee for Legislative Relief.
Also under the purview of compliance and student services is academic success for student athletes. Steve Spencer manages the function by assisting student-athletes with class registration and communication about academic resources for student-athletes. Spencer ensures student-athletes' progress toward earning a degree and graduating.
Spencer also serves as advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Cal State East Bay.
Haduca Covell spoke about her experience working with Spencer at East Bay. "The work Steve and I do on a day to day basis is so intertwined. We make a great team as we both were former student-athletes, college coaches and have each worked in higher education for over 20 years. Our ability to see the experience of the student-athlete through these different lenses allow us to better serve them in our roles."
