Martinez Leads Pioneers to Fourth-Place Team Finish at SF State Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State East Bay women's cross country team delivered one of its strongest performances of the fall on Friday evening, racing to a fourth-place finish at the SF State Invitational behind a stellar effort from Angelique Martinez.

Martinez paced the Pioneers, clocking 22:03.0 over the 6K course to place sixth overall in a deep field that featured top programs from across the West Region. Her time was just two seconds off a podium finish and marked her highest individual placement of the season.

Madison Gomez followed with an impressive showing of her own, taking 19th overall in 22:36.2, while Yamilet Deniz wasn't far behind in 22:41.4 to finish 22nd. Hope Brookins continued her consistent season with a 26th-place finish in 22:49.1, and Jenna Rodriguez closed out the scoring five in 23:01.0 (29th), helping the Pioneers post a team total of 102 points and a combined time of 1:53:10.7.

Grace Veloza (39th, 23:12.4) and Genevieve Tamondong (43rd, 23:19.7) rounded out the top seven for East Bay.

Cal State East Bay's fourth-place finish put the team ahead of Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly Humboldt, and San Francisco State, with only Concordia (Irvine), Stanislaus State, and Chico State finishing higher.

The Pioneers race for the final time before the CCAA Championships next Saturday when they run in Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara.
