Pioneers Drop Road Match in Five Sets to Sonoma State
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay volleyball took on Sonoma State Saturday afternoon in CCAA action. The Seawolves defeated the Pioneers in a five set thriller, 3-2 (21-25, 25-14, 16-25, 25-20, 15-13).

Both teams battled evenly in the opening set to reach 20-20. Then, a service ace by Kara Green put the Pioneers ahead 21-20, then they scored four of the next five points, with the set being won on a kill from Lexi Pagani. CSUEB won the first set 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Seawolves dominated the second set and won 25-14 to tie the match 1-1.
The Pioneers Built up to a 10 point lead on multiple occasions in set three, and eventually won the third set 25-16, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
After a 10-10 tie in the fourth set, Sonoma State scored the next three points. Although not leading by more than five points for the remainder of the set, the Seawolves did not look back and won the fourth set, 25-20 forcing a deciding set.
In the deciding set set, the Pioneers started on a 8-4 run capped by a Pagani service ace and even led 10-6. The Seawolves climbed back to tie the set at 10-10 on an assisted block by Krist and Leilani Hallman. After the Pioneers took the lead at 13-12 on a Pagani kill, the Sonoma State scored the final three points of the set to win the fifth set 15-13 and ultimately the match, 3-2.

- Mia Jordan had 13 kills for the Pioneers and a .600 attack percentage in the match.
- Megan Crecelius matched a season-high 30 assists for the Pioneers. With her 12 digs, she earned a double-double on Saturday.
- Pagani for the Pioneers had a team-high 19 digs. She had 10 kills for her 11th double-double of the season.
- Defensively, Jordan had four total blocks and with three total each were Taumafa Tuinauvai, Fane Paua and Pagani.
- As a team, the Pioneers had an attack percentage of .303.
- With the loss, Cal State East Bay sits in seventh place in the CCAA standings, two games out of the final available CCAA Tournament berth with four matches remaining in the regular season.

The final two home matches of the 2023 season are next on the Pioneers' schedule. The first of the pair of home matches takes place Friday, November 3 when they host No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino. The Pioneers lost in four sets to the Coyotes on September 23.
