Pioneer Spotlight: Tehani Kong
In another stellar season for the Cal State East Bay women's swimming team, sophomore Tehani Kong has once again shattered expectations and set new benchmarks in the pool. A driving force behind the Pioneers' successes, Kong's achievements this season have highlighted her as an athlete of exceptional talent and determination.
Tehani Kong's season is one for the history books, as she continues to build on her impressive debut last year. This season, she set new Pioneer records in both the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.06 and the 100-yard butterfly at just 54.19 seconds, surpassing her previously held records. Also this season, she was named PCSC Female Swimmer of the Week during October 27 to November 2.
Kong's journey at Cal State East Bay began last year when she made a remarkable impact as a freshman. Her accolades included being named the Cal State East Bay's Female Freshman of the Year and securing positions on the CSCAA First and Second Team All-America. Additionally, she was eighth in the nation at the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard butterfly, where she first set a school record. Kong has also been pivotal in leading her team to set new records in relays, emphasizing her role in both individual and team successes.
In a heartfelt reflection on her achievements and aspirations, Tehani shared, "My goals inspire me to stay hungry when times get tough. They keep me grounded and help me understand my 'why.' I keep a goal as my phone wallpaper as a constant reminder of the hard work that will pay off one day. My teammates also inspire me every single day. Everyone comes to practice with that golden energy that fuels one another, and it's contagious. Swimming can be boring, but my friends make it fun. It truly is a team sport, and I would not be able to do it without the good fun everyone brings. When I catch myself on the block feeling nervous before the 200 fly, I ease up and remember I am swimming for my team."
Accompanying her competitive ambitions, Kong is equally dedicated to her academic goals, aiming for a 4.0 GPA this semester.
The sophomore from Hawaii embraces what nature brings to the home waters. "In my free time I enjoy diving for shells back at home. I would spend hours on end looking for shells in the water. It's like finding candy in the ocean and is one of the things I miss most about being away from home."
As Tehani Kong sets her sights on future championships and continues to strive for excellence both in the pool and in the classroom, the Pioneers are fortunate to have such an inspiring athlete representing their team. Her tenacity and team spirit continue to make waves, promising another exciting postseason ahead for the Pioneers.
