This Week in Pioneer Athletics (Sept. 4-10)

The 2024-25 athletic year officially begins this week for Cal State East Bay with five Pioneer teams in action on the road. Below are brief previews of this week's upcoming action, which starts this coming Thursday.

The Pioneers begin the 2024 campaign this week with four matches on the campus of CSU Pueblo in the Steel City Showcase, as they look to improve off a 2023 record of 13-12. Highlighting the returners for the Pioneers are seniors Mia Jordan (2024 CCAA Preseason Watchlist), Lexi Pagani and Alexandria Gloria. Under the direction of head coach Kimberly Lambert in her seventh year (sixth played season) at East Bay, the new roster includes a mix of returners and newcomers.

The 2024 season starts north of the border for the Pioneers with a matchup at Simon Fraser, which will also be the first contest for the program with Anne Whipple serving as head coach. The Pioneers and Red Leafs opened the 2023 season with a 0-0 draw. The Pacific Northwest road trip wraps up Sunday with a showdown at Saint Martin's. The most notable returners for East Bay include Mika Sayfurahman (2023 CCAA Midfielder of the Year, 2024 CCAA Preseason Watchlist), Morgan Pearson, Abigail Kern, Jaeden Nelson, Kylie Newman and Sara Redfield. There are eight new members of the team in 2024.

In his first season overseeing the Pioneers in 2023, head coach Mike Haswell guided the program to seven wins for the first time as a CCAA member. He will look to build on that success starting Friday, opening against Dominican for a second straight season. East Bay takes on the Penguins and Westminster Griffins in the Humboldt Kickoff Classic. On the CCAA Preseason Watchlist is Aaron Farnan, who returns to the squad after scoring a team-high six goals in 2023. Another notable returner for the Pioneers, Other notable returners include Drew Gibbons, Adan Corona, Landon Raftery, Oscar Avendano and Julian Valle. There are also 18 new faces on the roster.

Norm Alston will lead the Pioneers for a second straight season. A four-mile course will be the path in which East Bay will compete on at Woodward Park on Saturday morning, as the team will get an idea of the land which will host the 2024 CCAA Cross Country Championships in October. Cole McKain, a three-time All-CCAA runner who is on the 2024 CCAA Preseason Watchlist, looks for even more success in his senior season. For Saturday, eight Pioneers will run in the first meet of the season.

For Saturday, 10 runners from Cal State East Bay are expected to compete. Among the notable returners running on Saturday are Madison Armstrong, Karla Galvan, Madison Gomez and Evelyn Zambrano-Montemayor. Norm Alston will lead the program for a second-straight season, starting with a 5k at Woodward Park. During the meet, the Pioneers will get a sense for the course where the 2024 CCAA Cross Country Championships will take place in October.
