Pioneers Open CCAA Play with 2-1 Road Win at Stanislaus State
TURLOCK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's soccer started conference play in style on Friday afternoon, earning a 2-1 victory over Stanislaus State at Warrior Stadium. The Pioneers used second-half goals from Morgan Pearson and Kella Folkerts, to improv to 3-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in CCAA action.
After a scoreless opening half where both sides traded chances, the Pioneers broke through in the 55th minute. Pearson calmly converted from the penalty spot to give East Bay a 1-0 lead, notching her team leading 4th goal of the season. Just four minutes later, Folkerts doubled the advantage, stealing a pass from a Stanislaus defender and dribbling for a breakway. She then slotted her right footed shot inside the far post.
The Warriors clawed back in the 70th minute when Olivia Maragos scored to make it 2-1. Goalkeeper Ashley Levi and Pioneers defense did the rest, shutting down the Warriors for the final 20 minutes. Levi made four stops in net, including a key save in the 86th minute that preserved the lead.
East Bay generated 13 shots overall, led by Mika Sayfurahman, who tallied five attempts, while Folkerts and Pearson each found the back of the net.
Cal State East Bay is back in action Sunday afternoon when they take on UC Merced at 11:30 am.
