Pioneers Secure Fourth Place in Season Opener at Woodward Park

FRESNO, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's cross country team launched itsĀ 2024 season at the Seawolf Invitational, held Saturday morning at Woodward Park. The Pioneers secured a fourth-place finish among seven scoring teams, demonstrating their potential for the upcoming season.

Woodward Park, the venue for this season opener, will also host the 2024 CCAA Cross Country Championships in October, providing the Pioneers with valuable course familiarity.

  • Leading the charge for Cal State East Bay was Madison Gomez, who crossed the finish line in 16th place overall with a time of 19 minutes, 38.31 seconds in the 5k event.
  • Close behind was Nelly Isidro, claiming 25th place with a time of 20:01.45.
  • The Pioneers' top five was rounded out by Yamilet Deniz (29th - 20:15.95), Karla Galvan (33rd - 20:57.83) and Natalie Goumashyan (37th - 21:04.29).

Their collective effort secured the team's fourth-place finish in a competitive field of 74 runners.

The Seawolf Invitational, dominated by host Sonoma State, saw the Seawolves claim victory with all five of their scoring runners finishing in the top-10. Sonoma State's Constance O'Neal took first place in the women's 5k with a finish of 18:03.03.

The Pioneers will continue their season next Saturday, September 14, at the Stump Invitational, hosted by UC Davis. The meet will take place at the Putah Creek Reserve in Davis, California, where the team will tackle a 6k course, starting at 10 a.m.
