Pioneer Softball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball won a pair of CCAA games on Saturday to sweep a doubleheader at Cal State San Marcos, winning the first game, 2-0, then taking the series finale, 6-2 at CSUSM Softball Field. With the two wins, along with other action in the CCAA, the Pioneers climb into sixth place in the conference standings, which represents the final position to qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One – Cal State East Bay 2, Cal State San Marcos 0

 Annelise Garcia led the game off by drawing a walk. Later in the top of the first inning, with Garcia on base, Cynthia Carrillo launched a two-run home run to left field as the Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead.
 
Two runs was all the Pioneers needed in game one, as an outstanding complete game performance by Ashlee Toy in the circle led to a shutout for the 2-0 win.

  • Carrillo went 2-for-3 in game one as her home run was her fourth of the season.
  • Toy pitched 7.0 innings for the complete game shutout allowing only three hits and striking out one. It was her second complete game shutout of the season.
Game Two – Cal State East Bay 6, Cal State San Marcos 2

Like game one, the Pioneers took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With Toy on base, Adriana Martinez launched her fifth home run of the season. Two more runs were added in the top of the first after RBI singles from Alexa Zumstein and Ysabella Cortez. CSUEB quickly led 4-0.
 
In the top of the third with the bases loaded, Serena Cadena entered the game as a pinch hitter and she capitalized on the opportunity. She delivered a single to drive in a pair of runs for a 6-0 lead.
 
The Cougars did score two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but outstanding pitching by Marissa Quintero kept CSUSM scoreless the rest of the game as the Pioneers won 6-2 to sweep Saturday's doubleheader.

  • Carrillo went 3-for-4 in the second game finishing with five hits on the day.
  • Toy, Cortez and Jeslyn Cuellar each had two hits in game two.
  • Quintero picked up her 14th win of the season with a complete game, allowing two earned runs and striking out five.
  • With the two wins, Cal State East Bay sits in sixth place in the CCAA standings, percentage points ahead of Cal Poly Humboldt for the final CCAA Tournament spot. There are four games remaining for all teams in the conference.

UP NEXT FOR CAL STATE EAST BAY

The final series of the 2024 regular season starts this coming Friday at Pioneer Softball Field which could very well have major postseason implications for the Pioneers. Cal State East Bay hosts Stanislaus State for a four-game series as Friday's series opener starts at 1 p.m.
