Pioneer Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday

LOLETA, Calif. – With Friday's postponed CCAA doubleheader, No. 14 Cal State East Bay softball finished a four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep against Cal Poly Humboldt at Bear River Casino Sports Complex.

GAME SUMMARIES
Game One: Cal State East Bay 5, Cal Poly Humboldt 4 (9 innings)

The Pioneers' offense started right away as Ashlee toy led off the game with a single, and would get to third base after an error. Marissa Farias had a productive groundout with an RBI that drove in Toy for a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Annelise Garcia scored a run courtesy of an RBI single from Jeslyn Cuellar for a 2-0. 

The Lumberjacks tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. 

East bay broke the tie in the top of the fourth when Toy hit an RBI single to drive in Amelia Morales and Garcia also hit an RBI single in the inning for a 4-2 lead. 

A two-run double in the bottom of the sixth by Katlyn Gifford tied the game at 4-4. 

Neither team scored in the seventh inning, and extra innings were needed to decide a winner. The eighth was also scoreless. 

Garcia led off the ninth with a double and reached third on a single from Farias. Then, Alexa Zumstein delivered an RBi single to drive in Garcia for the go-ahead run. 

As a relief pitcher, Toy retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to clinch a 5-4 extra inning win for the Pioneers. Toy was the pitcher of record with the win and 3.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts. 

Game Two: Cal State East Bay 2, Cal Poly Humboldt 0

Toy led off game two with a walk, and reached scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Garcia. Farias hit an RBI double for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Later in the inning, Cynthia Carrillo doubled as Farias scored to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. 

Despite the Pioneers being unable to score more runs and finishing the game with only three hits, the pitching and defense were phenomenal, with only four hits allowed to the Lumberjacks as East Bay won 2-0. 

Toy continued her dominance in the circle with 7.0 scoreless innings for a complete game shutout and improving to 11-2 on the season.

NOTABLE STATS
  • In 10.2 innings pitched on Saturday, Toy had eight strikeouts and no runs allowed. The last 19.1 innings Toy has pitched have been scoreless. Toy has the CCAA's lowest earned run average among qualifying pitchers at 0.86.
  • Toy was also spectacular offensively on Saturday. She went 3-for-7, scoring twice with one RBI and reached base four times. 
  • In game one, Toy had three hits while Garcia, Zumstein, Cuellar, Morales and Gabriela Rivera had two each.

UP NEXT FOR CAL STATE EAST BAY

The Pioneers host Stanislaus State next Friday and Saturday for a four-game CCAA series. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. from Pioneer Softball Field.
