Pioneer Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day on Sunday

HAYWARD, Calif. - On Sunday, Cal State East Bay men's soccer celebrated Senior Day prior to a CCAA showdown against Sonoma State at Pioneer Stadium. The Seawolves used a pair of first half goals to defeat the Pioneers 2-1.

GOAL SUMMARY
  • In the 19th minute, Aaron Farnan scored his team-high fifth goal of the season (11th of his career) for the Pioneers after a long pass from Drew Gibbons.
  • Patrick Neill of the Seawolves tied the match at 1-1 with a penalty kick in the 32nd minute which was his third goal of the season.
  • Neill took a corner kick in the 44th minute, and found Michael Gray, who scored a go-ahead goal as Sonoma State led 2-1 shortly before halftime.

  • Farnan's five goals is tied for eighth most in the CCAA through Sunday.
  • Farnan led the Pioneers had a match-high five shots
  • The Seawolves outshot the Pioneers 17-12 while the Pioneers had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Prior to the match, Gibbons, Farnan, along with Marco Antonio Campos, Jacob Castro, Mateo DiDomenico, Aidan Raftery and Mallel Rios were recognized in a Senior Day ceremony. 
  • With the loss to Sonoma State, the separation between sixth and seventh place in the CCAA standings widened. The Pioneers currently have eight points in seventh place with Sonoma State and Chico State having 13 each tied for the final two CCAA Tournament spots in the standings (fifth and sixth place). Three regular season conference matches remain for all CCAA teams.

UP NEXT FOR CAL STATE EAST BAY

With three matches remaining in the regular season, the next two are on the road for the Pioneers, first of which is this coming Friday at 4:30 p.m. Cal State East Bay will take on No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Stadium.
