Late Goal Sinks Pioneers in 1–0 Loss to Cal State Monterey Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team suffered a tough 1–0 defeat to Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon.  The Pioneers surrendered a late goal to the Otters in the 84th minute to move to 5-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in CCAA play.

Both teams battled evenly throughout the match, but neither could capitalize on several first-half opportunities.  Ashley Levi made two first half stops while her Monterey Bay counterpart made three to keep it scoreless at the half.

East Bay's best chance in the opening half came early, when forward Kella Folkerts nearly put the Pioneers ahead in the 9th minute. Her shot ricocheted off the right post before Otter goalkeeper Willow Baltazar made a save seconds later.

The decisive moment came in the 84th minute, when Monterey Bay's Gianna Foss broke the deadlock with a strike, giving the Otters a 1–0 advantage they would not relinquish.

Levi kept East Bay in the match with another stellar performance, recording seven saves.  She saw her scoreless streak extend to over 300 minutes before the Otters goal snapped it.

East Bay pressed hard in the closing minutes, with Morgan Pearson and Jaeden Nelson each firing shots toward goal, but neither could find the target as the Pioneers ran out of time.

The Pioneers finished with nine total shots, three on goal, compared to 14 from the Otters.

East Bay returns to CCAA action next Friday when they travel to face Cal State San Bernardino before a showdown with defending National Champions Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.
