Pioneers Outlast Cal State Dominguez Hills in Four-Sets
HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay volleyball continued its strong run of conference form Friday night, defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills 3–1 (23–25, 25–11, 25–20, 28–26) at Pioneer Gymnasium. The Pioneers improved to 8–7 overall and 5–2 in CCAA play with their third straight victory
Barakat Adekola led a balanced Pioneer attack with 17 kills and 15 digs, while Jada Stone added 11 kills and 12 digs in an all-around performance. East Bay hit an efficient .196 as a team, overcoming a slow start to win three straight sets.
After dropping a tightly contested first set 25–23, the Pioneers stormed back in the second to even the match. East Bay hit .281 in the frame while holding the Toros to a negative hitting percentage to cruise to a 25–11 win. Malayah Adams and Natali Herrera combined for eight kills in the set to lead the offense.
The third set was another offensive showcase for East Bay, posting a .257 hitting percentage, with Stone and Adams delivering timely kills to pull away late for a 25–20 victory. Pi'ilani Carvalho continued to command the offense, finishing the match with 37 assists, 22 digs, and two service aces, while Kale'a Kuamo'o was outstanding in the back row with 23 digs and three aces.
The final set proved to be a nail-biter, as both teams traded leads deep into extra points. The Pioneers finally sealed it, 28–26, on the conseuctive points to close out the match.
Adams contributed 10 kills and four blocks, while Herrera hit .333 with five kills and two blocks. East Bay out-hit Dominguez Hills .196 to .054, finished with seven service aces, and held a 49-45 kill advantage.
The Pioneers go for four straight victories tomorrow when they host Cal Poly Pomona at 2:00 pm.
