SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Cal State East Bay men's soccer earned its first win of the season Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field, edging Dominican 3-2 in a back-and-forth non-conference matchup. The Pioneers capitalized on an early own goal, a penalty kick conversion, and a second-half strike from Yuto Hatayama that proved decisive.
 

• East Bay struck first in the 11th minute, when an own goal to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
• The Penguins pulled level in the 28th minute, as Sergio Laguna finished a buildup that began with Brandon Selway and Dimani Mathlin to make it 1-1.
• The Pioneers went back in front in the second half. After a Dominican yellow card, Jonas Banouas buried the ensuing penalty kick in the 51st minute for a 2-1 advantage.
• East Bay doubled its margin in the 70th minute, when Hatayama scored his third career goal — and eventual game-winner — to push the lead to 3-1.
• Dominican answered quickly, with Rolando Gonzalez striking unassisted in the 78th minute to close the gap to 3-2.

The Penguins surged in the final 11-plus minutes, firing six shots, including four on target, but goalkeeper Adan Corona stood tall with a series of late saves to secure the result.
 

• Alejandro Zarate led the Pioneers with five shots, including two on goal. He has nine in total through two matches. 
• Hatayama's third career goal was his first career game-winner.
• Of seven saves in net, Corona made four saves in the closing stretch to preserve the lead for the win.

Cal State East Bay continues non-conference action next Saturday, Sept. 13, traveling to Fresno for a fixture against Fresno Pacific at Ramirez Field. The Pioneers will look to avenge last season's narrow 1-0 road defeat to the Sunbirds. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
