Pioneer Volleyball Loses Pair of Matches Friday in Hawaii Challenge
HONOLULU — Cal State East Bay women's volleyball continued play at the Hawai'i Challenge on Friday with a pair of tough matchups, falling in four sets to Hawai'i Hilo at the HPU Shark Tank in the morning and later dropping a three-set match to No. 9 Chaminade at McCabe Gym.
The Pioneers took the second set against Hilo but could not overcome a balanced Vulcans attack in a 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19 decision. In the evening, East Bay faced the nationally ranked Silverswords and battled through key rallies before falling 25-20, 25-14, 25-18.

Hawai'i Hilo 3, Cal State East Bay 1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19)
- First set: The Pioneers hung tight early, pulling even at 7-7 after a block from Malayah Adams and Fane Paua. THe set was a close battle to 19-19. Then the Vulcans finished the set on a 6-1 run.
- Second set: East Bay responded in set two, which was also tightly contested. Trailing 23-21, a kill from Natali Herrera sparked a 4-0 rally to end the set in the Pioneers' favor, 25-23.
- Third set: Hilo opened 7-3 and never trailed, hitting .435 in the frame. Although the deficit was not insurmountable in the set for East Bay, Hilo kept ahed the resto of the wat toward a 25-17 win.
- Fourth set: The Vulcans jumped out 11-3 and did not look back as they completed the 3-1 win by taking the fourth set, 25-19.
- First set: After trailing 17-9, the Pioneers battled back and trailed by just three, 23-20 after a kill by Herrera. But Chaminade took the last two points to win 25-20.
- Second set: Chaminade controlled throughout, as the Silverswords closed on consecutive service aces for a 25-14 win.
- Third set: The Pioneers surged to a 10-5 lead with with a block from Brooklynne Traficante and Barakat Adekola. But after the block, the Silverswords finished the match with a 20-8 stretch to complete the sweep.
