Pioneers Fall to Cal State San Bernardino on the Road
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit Friday afternoon, falling 5–0 to Cal State San Bernardino in a CCAA matchup. The Pioneers moved to 5-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in CCAA play with the loss.
San Bernardino struck first just 1:23 into the match when Jackeline Fuentes scored and then added another less than three minutes later on a goal by Emilee Perez. Perez added her second goal in the 24th minute, giving CSUSB a 3–0 halftime lead.
Despite the early setback, Cal State East Bay settled in and began to create opportunities of their own. Mika Sayfurahman was a bright spot for the Pioneers, recording four shots, including two on goal.
The Coyotes extended their lead shortly after the break, with Cervantes scoring in the 46th minute and Jaclyn Silva adding a goal in the 78th to cap the scoring.
East Bay goalkeeper Natalie Hassmann made seven saves in 90 minutes of action, including a stop on a 71st-minute penalty kick. Hassmann faced a barrage of 24 total shots from the Coyotes, who put 13 on target, while the Pioneers recorded 10 shots.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Sunday when they continue their Southern California road trip against Cal Poly Pomona.
