BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team concluded its season-opening three-game road trip with an 84-59 loss to (RV) Western Washington on Tuesday evening at WECU Court at Carver Gym.
 

The Pioneers faced a tough challenge against the Vikings, who took control early and maintained their lead throughout the contest. Western Washington jumped out to a 26-11 advantage after the first quarter and never looked back.

Cal State East Bay showed improvement in the third quarter, outscoring Western Washington 19-16, but couldn't overcome the early deficit. The Pioneers' effort was hindered by 24 turnovers, which the Vikings converted into 37 points.
 

• Taylor Eldredge led Cal State East Bay with 17 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.
• Lailah Carey and Aunika Hornung each contributed 10 points, with Hornung also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
• Also adding 10 points was Brooke Donnelly, who made a pair of shots from beyond the arc. 
• Carey also added five assists on Tuesday.
• Defensively, Eldredge had two steals and Hornung had a block and a steal. 
• The Pioneers struggled to contain Western Washington's offense, which shot 42.9 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from 3-point range.
• The Vikings' balanced attack featured five players scoring in double figures, led by Olivia Wikstrom's 21 points and 11 rebounds.

"It was a tough road trip and not the way we wanted to start the season off. We will take this as a learning experience and use the next seven days by working hard in practice and be ready for our home opener against Menlo."

The Pioneers will look to regroup as they return home for their 2024-25 home opener. East Bay hosts Menlo on Tuesday, November 19, with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward, California.
