DAY ONE RECAP: Pioneer Men’s Golf at RJGA Palm Valley Classic

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The first two rounds of the RJGA Palm Valley Classic teed off Monday from Palm Valley Golf Club, as Cal State East Bay men's golf sits in eighth place among 19 teams heading into the final round on Tuesday.

  • Melker Backstrom finished as the lowest scoring member of the Pioneers on Monday, as a 68 in the second round led to an overall score of 2-under-par 142 (74-68) through 36 holes played. He had eight birdies combined in both of Monday's rounds.
  • Just one stroke back of Backstrom is Easton Hether, who had seven birdies and one eagle in 36 holes played.
  • Also with one eagle on Monday was Cooper Groshart, along with eight birdies.

Through two rounds, three golfers are tied atop the leaderboard at 11-under-par, including Ron Kildall from Fort Lewis, Adam Niles from Western New Mexico and Seth Bearden from Midwestern State. Colorado Christian leads the team scoring through Monday's action.
 
The final round of the 2023-24 regular season for the Pioneers tees off at 7:30 a.m. with a modified shotgun start from Palm Valley Golf Club.
