Pioneer Baseball Splits Friday's Doubleheader With CSUDH to Open Series

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball started a four-game CCAA series with Cal State Dominguez Hills at Pioneer Baseball Field on Friday. The Pioneers won game one of the doubleheader 14-2 and lost game two, 11-7.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One – Cal State East Bay 14, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2

The Pioneers' offense exploded for ten runs in the opening two innings. The first six batters for the Pioneers in the bottom of the first inning reached base, and all six eventually scored a run in the first inning. After CSUDH got on the board in the top of the second, four more runs were added to the Pioneers' tally in the second from RBI singles hit by Matthew O'Mahony and Niko Mollat, an RBI double from Alonzo Guijarro and a solo home run by Sam Gilliam as CSUEB led 10-1 through two innings.
 
The Pioneers would score another run in the bottom of the third inning on a Luke Novitske RBI groundout to the shortstop that drove in Danelle Daniels. Although the Toros would score a run in the top of the fourth inning, the Pioneers responded in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Niko Mollat RBI sacrifice fly to left field for a 12-2 lead.
 
The Pioneers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning including one from an RBI double by Guijarro and another from a sacrifice fly RBI from O'Mahony for a 14-2 lead. The final three innings were scoreless as the Pioneers cruised to a 14-2 win to open the series.  

  • RJ Aranda picked up the win for the Pioneers to improve to 1-1 allowing no runs and striking out four.
  • Max Gonzales pitched four innings and had five strikeouts.
  • Guijarro and  O'Mahony had three hits and three RBIs each in game one. Guijarro's three hits were all doubles.
  • Luke Brown had two doubles and a triple. 
Game Two – Cal State Dominguez Hills 11, Cal State East Bay 7

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Guijarro singled to left field to drive in Brown and Danelle Daniels for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Toros would score eleven runs over the course of the next three innings to take the lead for good, highlighted by a three-run home run each from Anthony Accordino and Noah Karliner. CSUDH led 11-2 in the middle of the fifth.
 
Jaylen Hodges tripled down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth to drive in Gilliam, then Hodges scored on a sacrifice fly RBI hit by Daniels as CSUEB trailed 11-4.
 
O'Mahony hit a three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the Pioneers within four runs, trailing 11-7. However, the Pioneers were held scoreless the rest of the way and the Toros won game two, 11-7.  

  • Guijarro led the Pioneers offensively going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
  • O'Mahony has eight home runs on the season and 14 for his career.
