Pioneer Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader vs. Chico State

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball swept a CCAA doubleheader against Chico State on Saturday, winning 6-5 in the first game on a walk-off RBI single and taking the second game in seven innings, 6-4.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One – Cal State East Bay 6, Chico State 5

Matthew Olivares hit an RBI single to center field that drove in Jacob Klinovsky in the bottom of the second inning to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats would tie the game in the top of the fifth inning with one run on a solo home run by Michael Baker.

The Pioneers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth when an error by the Wildcats allowed Quinn Ayres and Danelle Daniels to score on the play. Matthew O'Mahony singled to left field later in the inning with an RBI for a 4-1 lead.

The Wildcats would score two runs in the top of the seventh inning, both on bases loaded walks.

CSUEB countered with one run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Novitske single to the shortstop that drove in Aidan Morton for a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Troy Kent hit a single to drive in a pair of runs to even the game at 1-1. 

Ayres hit a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth, then reached second on a single from Novitske, then third when O'Mahony drew a walk to load the bases. Then, Jacob Klinovsky delivered an RBI walk-off single to give the Pioneers a 6-5 win. 

  • In relief, Drake Richardson picked up his first win of the season.
  • Ayres went 3-for-5 in the game and scored two runs. He hit a single, a double and a triple. 
Game Two – Cal State East Bay 6, Chico State 4 (7 innings)

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Jacob Froess hit an RBI single to right field tin the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. Also in the bottom of the fourth, Jaylen Hodges hit a sacrifice bunt that drove in  Brenden Bell for the go-ahead run. Following Hodges' bunt, Danelle Daniels hit an RBI single for a 3-1 lead. 

Although Chico State scored a run in the top of the fifth, back-to-back home runs helped the Pioneers pull away for a 6-2 advantage. Klinovsky hit a two-run home run, then Bell lauched a solo home run to follow. 

In the top of the seventh with two outs, the Wildcats hit back-to-back singles, then Carson Stevens doubled to drive in two runs, as CSUEB's lead was down to a run. After the double, a single followed for the tying run on base. However, the final out was on a caught stealing play as the Pioneers won 6-4 to sweep the doubleheader. 

  • Max Gonzales picked up the win with a complete seven-inning performance.
  • Bell went 3-for-3 in game two, which included a double and a his seventh home run of the season.
